Module 1: Introduction to Mahayana
with Andy Karr and Jean Marie Robbins
September 3 - October 15, 2026
Introduction to Mahayana
We open by providing an overview of the Mahayana path, beginning with a review of the foundational teachings and the importance of mindfulness-awareness meditation. From this ground, the module turns toward the bodhisattva path through the study of absolute and relative bodhicitta.
Over seven classes, students explore the way of the bodhisattva through both study and practice. This includes heart-opening practices such as loving-kindness and tonglen, alongside engagement with the teachings on emptiness (shunyata).
Topics include the four limitless qualities in relation to emptiness, twofold egolessness, and the process of becoming a bodhisattva. Drawing on The Profound Treasury of the Ocean of Dharma, the module offers a practical and contemplative introduction to Mahayana as a path of wisdom, compassion, and direct engagement with experience.
