Judge Gálvez

Judge Miguel Ángel Gálvez Aguilar is a former judge in the High Risk Court B of Guatemala, where he served for over ten years, overseeing cases involving grave human rights violations, corruption, and widespread impunity following the 36-year civil war in Guatemala. His work proved to be instrumental in holding former heads of state accountable for their war crimes, abuses of power and networks of corruption. Yet his involvement in these cases also carried serious risks as he was subject to harassment, threats against his life, and political persecution. As such, in November of 2022, he went into exile and has yet to return to Guatemala.

Fighting Impunity in Guatemala’s Judicial System - Public Talk

June 26, 2026
In keeping with Breaking the Silence (BTS) tradition, we would like to invite our Tatamagouche community (and beyond!) to join us for a public talk with our Guatemalan guest the Friday evening of our Annual Gathering. BTS is incredibly privileged to have, as  our 2026 Guatemalan guest speaker, exiled Judge Miguel Angel Gálvez, presently based in Costa Rica and a Fellow of the Guatemalan Human Rights Commission in Washington. This talk is open to anyone and free of charge.
